Every Saturday, head to the Creative Park for inspiring drawing classes with illustrator POV! We met him to learn more about his life, his inspirations, and the creative workshops he organises at Beau Plan.

Hello POV! To begin with, tell us about your journey.

Since childhood, I have always felt comfortable with drawing, especially humorous illustration. My art school was reading and copying comic books such as Gaston Lagaffe, Blueberry, and Les Dingodossiers. In 1997, while I was studying Natural Sciences at the University of Antananarivo in Madagascar, my home country, I seized the opportunity to become a press cartoonist for the daily newspaper Midi Madagasikara. Since then, I have completed training in journalism and worked in the media industry – first as a journalist, and later mainly as an editorial cartoonist. In 2006, I moved to Mauritius, where I have been drawing daily for L’Express. I also ventured into illustration and comic books, and more recently, I have started sharing my experience through classes and workshops.

And speaking of that, you recently started giving classes in Beau Plan. What motivated you about this project?

I realised that many people of all ages enjoy drawing for different reasons, whether for fun, in their professional lives, or even as a form of therapy. Everyone may want to improve their practice in some way, and that is where I would like to offer support whenever it is relevant. I live close to Beau Plan, so it is very convenient for me. On top of that, I find the Creative Park to be a pleasant and calming space, one that encourages exploration and the expression of creative energy.

Who are your classes for?

They are open to everyone from the age of 8 through to adults, regardless of their level! I tailor the teaching according to each participant’s interests and abilities. The scope is broad, as I cover at least eight aspects of drawing through different sessions and modules. In general, I teach introduction to drawing, anatomy, landscapes, composition, storytelling, storyboarding, comic books, and colouring. We mainly work on paper, but digital techniques are also part of the vision.

What inspires you about Beau Plan?

At first glance, Beau Plan inspires serenity. Then, I feel the presence of History unfolding: the rustic past reflected in the sugarcane fields, the remains of old buildings, the museum at L’Aventure du Sucre… Then comes the contemporary and urban side, with the shopping centre, offices, and new residences. If Beau Plan were a painting, it would be a gentle blend of colours that may seem opposite at first, but ultimately harmonise beautifully. And I am not only talking about the green and floral spaces!
