Pamplemousses Botanical Garden: Fun ideas for an enlightening walk

With its wide variety of plants, tranquil ponds and tucked-away corners, the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is the perfect setting for some wonderful adventures. Here’s how to make the most of a peaceful stroll through one of the southern hemisphere’s oldest botanical gardens.

  • Did you know that the talipot palm can grow up to seven meters high? Originally from Sri Lanka, the palm tree flowers only once in its 40 to 60-year lifetime, and dies shortly thereafter.
  • Bring a world map with you and note down all of the countries that the garden’s plants are from!
  • Wander through the gardens without a map or a guide … and enjoy getting lost!
  • Identify some of the 85 amusingly-named varieties of palm trees, including the royal palm, raffia palm, bottle palm and talipot palm.
  • Look up the local and international celebrities that the garden’s avenues are named after, and improvise a quiz with your friends!
  • Find the tree planted by Princess Margaret.
  • Read Paul and Virginie on the avenue named after the book.
